Utah State Championships – Brian Head, Utah

In Brian Head, the elevation at the top of the chairlift is 11,000 feet, enough altitude to make you breathe real hard just taking a walk to the bathroom. They get plenty of snow there in the winter months but still have a couple of these ponds to store water for their snow making equipment…man-made or not, they still paint a pretty picture!

There are some “High Dollar” condos nestled in these mountains. I believe that Brian Head Resort has a great future in store for them, as there is construction taking place on all sides of the Ski Slopes. Hopefully this will lead to an increase in the amount of dollars pumped into the Mountain Bike Park, as the Mountain Bike Park is growing steadily with new features added each time I pay a visit.

The KHS “Pit Area” is always a comfortable place for our riders. It is an important piece of the race puzzle, somewhere for the riders to store their gear, discuss their riding, get assistance with parts, and to simply feel at home. We are proud to be able to provide them with a professional pit area.

Maintenance is KEY! We always make sure that ALL our race bikes are perfectly maintained and ready to take care of business. This has been the best DH set-up we have ever had, and it is because of all our prestige’s sponsors and endless testing that has brought our equipment to this level. So much of what we do on the race track translates directly into our production bikes, and this makes our production KHS-DH200 a World Cup competition level race rig…ready to go right out of the box!

Keith Mott and myself discuss practice on our way over to get some pizza for lunch. Mott walks just like he rides – always way back in the saddle and WIDE OPEN!

During Fridays practice Matt Johnston had to do an emergency “get off” from his bike, landing directly in a knarly rock garden section, consequently rolling his ankle. This took Johnston out for the weekend but I think he will be back and good-to-go for the “NORBA Finals” two weeks from now.

It’s “go time” and it’s at this stage of the game that you hope you have done all your homework and are ready for the big test. Sunday mornings…or race days always bring an ominous quiet at the condo and in the pit area, everybody tries to get their game face on and keep their nerves in check.

Starting a DH race really heightens all your senses, it makes me feel somewhat supernatural in a way, and you have to believe you can conquer what you are about to undertake. If you cannot acquire that mindset whilst racing DH then racing can be somewhat scary and the course much harder to attack. The start at Brian Head has a wicked pedal section through some huge chunks of shale rock!

Once I leave the gate my mind goes to a different place. I am sure we all experience a similar state of mind under these conditions. It’s a “ZONE” where everything turns into slow motion, all you can hear are your tires eating the dirt, you try to focus your attention as far down the trail as possible and at the same time do your very best to convince your brain it is OK not to touch the brakes…

…then holding it together “Full Throttle” to the finish line is all that matters!!

Keith Mott exits the last woods section on fire, only a couple hundred yards to the finish line and a podium finish.

The KHS team always tries to practice together. This helps us gauge where we need to go faster or be a little more conservative. It also helps us establish good race lines. Our team knew that we would all be close at the end if we had clean runs…fortunately that is how it turned out!

Logan Binggeli ran the fastest time of the day for KHS, and this was with a crash. He is poised for a great finish at the Finals.

The KHS team is primed and ready to go for the Finals and plan to come back with “top shelf” results!

CRANKWORX – Winter Park, Colorado

Report by: Quinton Spaulding

Every race brings something new, however, sometimes we have to travel the same highways to reach different destinations. This time we were off to Winter Park, Colorado just a few short miles from Denver.

Colorado has an abundance of beautiful scenery and enough water to keep it fresh and healthy looking throughout the summer months. The Colorado River brings outdoor enthusiasts to journey the waters of one of the biggest rivers in the United States.

This was the second year that CrankWorx Colorado was hosted by Winter Park Resort. The 2007 inaugural year was a big success for promoter and organizer Darren Kinnaird. Darren said that the dates for CrankWorx 2009 have already been marked on the calender due to this years event being such a “Huge Success”.

It has been said that Winter Park, Colorado is destined to be the new Whistler. They have all the attributes needed to fill these shoes and it is fantastic to see that Mountain Biking in the U.S. is really starting to pick up and become a leader again.

The U.S. Forestry service has given the “powers that be” at Winter Park the green light to go ahead and build the trails needed to become the premier Mountain Bike Park in the U.S. They have been granted a $3M budget and also have a slew of trail-builders who will work alongside I.M.B.A. to help get this done.

The organizers spared no expense when it came to the construction of the “Slope Style” track. These obstacles took weeks to build and the dirt was groomed to absolute perfection. It was to be expected that we would see the riders “going off” on these huge hits!

There was a quarter pipe which finished off the Slope Style run. The entire riders runs were filmed by 3 separate TV cameras which allowed you a perfect view of everything should you be watching on either one of the two huge jumbo screens throughout the village.

Defending Slope Style Champion, Cam McCaul wasted no time going big during practice.

KHS Factory Racer Logan Binggeli surprised EVERYBODY with his Slope Style skills. He threw down 360′s, back-flip’s and huge whip’s.

The riders had limited time to get this course dialed, and the last thing you want as a rider is to be unprepared when boosting stunts of this magnitude.

Back-flip’s are serious business, “DO NOT try this at home, these are trained professionals on a closed course”.

Back to the top to do it again!

Binggeli had a great showing at the CrankWorx Slope Style event, he surprised everybody including the announcers. He took 16th place overall amongst the very best stunt riders in the world. He feels he could win something like this if he spent more time on it, and if you consider he is a racer over a stunt rider it is an exceptional result…well done Logan!

The crowd favorite Cam McCaul flips one of the hardest obstacles on the course!

It rained everyday in the afternoon hours…just enough to make everything pristine and ready for the next round of riding.

The jumbo TV screens were a fantastic side show and really showcased what a professional event this was. It is the lack of TV coverage and big sponsorship dollars that hold our sport back from being one of the most attractive extreme sports on the planet.

There were plenty of spots for refuge during these flash thunderstorms, and the Kona tent was a good spot because it was right in front of the “Big Screen”.

KHS was also close by, always extending a hand to anyone who needed technical support or simply just wanting to hang out.

The Downhill track was fun, it had a some very technical sections right out of the gate. I tried to hammer those areas to make up for any time I would loose along the flatter more pedaling sections towards the finish line.

Binggeli attacks the Downhill course during his final run – we got very little practice on this technical DH course so attacking was difficult.

I was EXTREMELY stoked to have placed 5th grabbing a spot on the podium at CrankWorx. This is possibly my highest profile finish yet, giving me a great boost of confidence leading up to the National Finals at Brian Head at the end of this month!

Binggeli had another good Dual Slalom event, he ended up taking 7th place overall and landed himself in the money, as they paid 10 deep at CrankWorx. He did especially well when beating Dual Slalom World Champion Brian Lopes on the red course raising a lot of eyebrows!

As always…A HUGE thanks to ALL our sponsors!!!
